An official SAT will be administered to ALL JUNIORS at no cost to students. No Registration necessary. SAT Subject Tests will not be offered on this date.

 

SAT & ACT COLLEGE ADMISSIONS TESTS

• It is recommended that all college bound students take the ACT and/or SAT Reasoning Test in the Spring of their Junior year.
• Registration information and practice pamphlets for all of these tests are available in the Guidance Office.
• It is the student’s responsibility to complete the registration directly with the testing company.
• Virtually all colleges accept results from both the SAT Reasoning Test and the ACT Test. Some students find they do better on one than the other. So, what makes the two tests different? According to the College Board, the SAT Reasoning Test assesses how well students analyze and solve problems-skills learned in school that are needed in college.  According to ACT, the ACT Test assesses high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work.
• Students applying to selective schools will also need to plan on taking the SAT Subject Tests
  (formerly Achievement Tests). These tests are given on the same dates and at the same sites as the SAT Reasoning Test.
• How to decide? Review your scores from the PSAT exam. Another good approach is to practice for each test. (You can do this inexpensively using test prep books and free online practices tests.) If your scores are markedly different, focus on the test with the better results.
• The only way to know definitely which test to take is to check the requirements of the school you plan to attend. Many students will take the SAT Reasoning Test and ACT.

 

PREPARATION TIPS FOR TAKING AN ADMISSIONS TEST

• Obtain and study the current and official descriptive material for the test: “Preparing for the ACT” (actstudent.org), “SAT Preparation Booklet” and “SAT Subject Tests Preparation Booklet”  (www.satpractice.org). Limited supplies may be available in the guidance office. 
• Take at least one practice test under the same time limits as an actual test.
• Take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) as a sophomore and a junior. (This is the National Merit Scholarship qualifying test for juniors.)  All juniors are pre-registered and paid for by the school district.
• Review areas of knowledge where the practice test showed a weakness.
• Explore the help and support that may be available to you from your school, community agencies and
  other agencies.
• ACT has an optional 30 minute Writing test section. Many universities encourage you to take this test.
• The SAT Reasoning Test includes a writing section that combines multiple-choice items with a 25-minute essay.
• Retest if, after taking the test the first time, you found you were not familiar or comfortable with the test procedures, or if your score was lower than your reasonable expectations.
